Get Up Campaign #2

I was recently asked by a friend to script two viral campaigns he is directing for GetUp (www.getup.org.au). The brief is that they want something catchy and memorable to encourage ex-patriate Australians to vote in the upcoming election.
This is one of the ideas I have submitted to him.

This piece is a parody of the current EAC ads - "your vote is precious"

(Tim an Australian backpacker is sitting at a bus-stop in a remote village. There is young black man, Bobo 25-35, sitting on one side of him, on the other side is a mother, 30-40, and a couple of her young children. There could be other villagers around too. Tim is sitting with a small chest on his lap, he is holding it lovingly).

Bobo: (curious) Hey what have you got there?

Tim: It's my vote. I'm taking it the embassy for the election.

Bobo: Oh. (beat) Can I see?

Tim: Sure.

(Tim opens up the chest slowly. There is a glow from inside, we cannot see the contents. Bobo looks over and into the chest. Tim is looking into the chest with great pride)

Bobo: (beat) Oh thats disgusting!

Tim: What?

Bobo: What are you going to do with that?

Tim: I'm going to use it. Put it in the slot.

Bobo: Oh!

Tim: Every Australian does it. There will be hundreds of us there putting it in.

Bobo: Put it away!

Tim: (innocently) Does anyone else want to see?

(The mother looks across for a second, spies the contents, shrieks loudly and covers her childrens eyes)

Bobo: (digusted) Think of the children!

V/O: Some people don't get democracy. We do.

(Bobo gets up and leaves off camera. He's horrified)

Tim: (calling after him) But its democracy.

Bobo: (cutting him off) It's disgusting!

V/O: No matter where you are in the world. Have your say on election day.
